A Faustian Tragedy
TEUFEL is a horror-mystery set in the darkest depths of the Middle Ages. Tensions run high in a remote mountain monastery when a blasphemous sacrifice sets off a string of grizzly murders. As fear, vengeance and a potent cocktail of psychoactive poisons take hold of the brotherhood, the destructive anxiety reaches an inevitable fever pitch. The Devil laughs as his plan comes together. It was never going to end well.

Seeped in the culture and superstitions of the old world, TEUFEL presents a heady view of its medieval setting. Taking inspiration from cinema - particularly the classics of Annaud’s/Eco's The Name of The Rose, Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc and Herzog’s Aguirre, The Wrath of God - as well as the delicious inevitability of the greek tragedy, it is a game that uses satisfying but not overly punishing puzzles to present a well-paced narrative. You don’t want to get stuck halfway on your descent into hell.

Visually, the game harkens back to the raw, grungy feel of early 3D graphics which along edited historical artworks makes the game feel like a relic from the olden days, without quoting a particular style too closely. The soundtrack composed by E.A. Benzon is made specifically for the game and is integrated with the progression of the gameplay, reflecting the story’s descent into madness in both the game’s visual and musical language.
